40S Columbia Westfield Compax Paratrooper Bicycle RareThis bike is very cool. It is the same as the military model.
This one was sold for use by the general public. Westfield compax paratroopers were one of the very few bikes actually produced during wwll for the civilian and military market. I am not usre if any soldier ever jumped into battle with one of these though i am certain that it was tried in training. These were designed to break down for easy transport, on your back, i suppose. The bike breaks down into 2 pieces with the tunr of one wing nut and sliding the frame coupler the bike frame will separate, and the handlebars fold up tight to the front fork by turning the lever located on the front of the bars at center. This entrie operatiion takes only seconds to do. This one is in great condition mechanically and not too bad looking fro its age. The chrome wheels run true with all double butted spokes presetn and tight. The morrow rear hub is very clean and functions as it should. The seat and chainguard and probably the grips are possibly replacements. The 2 piece handlebars are nice and function as they should but have almost on chrome left. This is a very very sturdy bike that could survive a fall from a tall building or a jump from an airplane. There are no signs of repair and no apparent damage ot the structure.
The paint is original with plenty if wear and shines very well, it looks as though it has been sanded at some point or scrubbed with steel wool. The fenders show some ewar at the ducktails. Not too bad, otherwise pretty darn straight. The tires are old mismatched 26x2.215 thye hold air but should be replaced.
This is your chance to own a very uncommon bicycle. This would be great for a military collector and this would be too cool in olive drab, but i believe that original paint that makes a decent presentation is better than a repaint of any sort. There will be no reserve on this rare bicycle. I can not ship this out of the country. |
